Some New Some Old to Approaches in Addiction Recovery

We have to take our hats off to the pioneers in research and back in 1935, when Alcoholics Anonymous was established by doctors Bob Smith and Bill Wilson. These two doctors single handily changed the way we approach addiction and recovery forever.

Yes addictions were around way back then and substance abuse was out of control and these two doctors believed that people suffering from addictions of any kind, can not possibly overcome their addictions and recovery by themselves. What they discovered is that substance addictions won’t get eradicated until you bring the current academic to public’s attention.

Moving along to today’s recovery programs they basically continue on the theme of the tried and true proven method of the step program which was originally designed by Doctor Smith and Wilson. The beauty of this program is it can be used whether your addiction is cocaine, nicotine, heroin, speed, alcohol and any other drug that you can think of.

If your currently an addict and are finally wanting to change your lifestyle and get back on track, in order for you to achieve this and be successful in addiction recovery, you’re going to have to admit to yourself that you do have an addiction and that your powerless to beat it without some help and support. Basically addicts are slaves to their addictions and they need a higher power to rely on as they fight and struggle to beat their addiction. The most important thing during the process is to forgive yourselves so you can clear the path for a complete and full recovery. What’s happen in the past has happened and you must look forward to the future and the exciting future that lay’s ahead.

When we talked about a higher power l was referring to the Doctors program and it does hold some religious beliefs. I guess some addicts might see this as a loophole and an out, but no ones telling you to become a christian or go to church on Sundays. What they’re saying is that there is another force at work and if you want that help and added strength during recovery that’s there to help you draw from within, it doesn’t hurt to believe and ask for that help.

What the Doctors are hinting at, is that if you don’t believe in the recovery program from the very start, there is not much chance of it working for you. Just put your faith or belief or whatever you want to call it, because then and only then full recovery will be realized.

As the years have rolled on by, l think most addicts of today, most certainly believe that their addiction is based on emotional and physical in structure and its their belief that they do not need any type of spiritual intervention. One question l put forth. Do you have a spirit?

The addiction recovery program starts off with sufferers getting intensive counseling. With this introduction to intensive counseling, the support person (advocate) will help the sufferer to understand that their very important to their family and friends and that they would like to see them get better. You have more skills and are very much are valued member of the family and friend unit, more so than you might think. You see they see right past the addiction and see you for you.

You see they also know the very importance of them being with and supporting you all the way through the recovery process. With them being so much part of your life, they would be an asset for you if you think or look like faltering through the struggles and withdrawals at anytime through the recovery process. They can provide you with immeasurable support and understanding that only a families love can do in keeping you away from any drugs. This is one way the family and friends can help the sufferer rebuild their lives.

It’s not going to be easy when you have finally beaten the addiction and start to try to go back to a normal way of life. Obviously there are going to be some temptations during your recovery from that old group of friends that were around you and were apart of your life when you were an addict. Be strong make new friendships, these people are going to try everything to drag you back down with them again. Yes they were friend back then but they can’t be now, you are vulnerable and you don’t need to be around old friends that are still doing that addiction you once had and used. Don’t go down that destructive path again, don’t be tempted you are a different person now to you were back then, you have a great future and a new beginning ahead of you. You should have the strength, your on the road to recovery now and strong enough to say no to them and move on, don’t forget you have support from your friends and family.

Through the whole recovery program the Doctors emphasize the importance of changing your past behaviour modification. What you must during your time in addiction rehab is to put a change (a plan) in your behavior in place, so you have a strategy for when your released. Say (for example) the first thing you normally do when you wake up at 6am in the morning (your like clock work always 6am) is your feet hit the floor for the first time, then all your mind can think off is getting that first (lets say drink) for the day and then your addicted body is satisfied.

Well what you do is just sleep in don’t get up at the usual time at 6am stay in bed and have a family member bring a cooked breakfast ready to go at 8am, change routine. You get my drift, just change your behavior (habit) you once had and break that cycle once and for all. They generally say it takes about thirty days to break a habit. The patient should be made to be aware and understand that of the physical dependency and the drugs or substance more than likely started with an emotional pain. You see the emotions and attitude are at the very root of any addiction. The sufferers should give more importance to their emotions and attitudes.

Most importantly you should not let any emotional feelings or attitudes kick you off on the wrong step again. I think you’re a winner already because if anyone can follow my writing to the end then your got a gift.

Honestly though if you’re determined enough to stop your addiction, you should seek immediate help as you can not do it alone. In most cases, you will undergo drug recovery programs which make use of the program designed by Doctor Smith and Wilson. Thanks to these two pioneers the addicts of today can be treated with a program that is highly effective and has a good success rate.

If you have a loved one with addiction problems or perhaps you’re the one with the problem, decide now because your future depends on it.
